I presume Isabelle De Peyronnet was the French intellectual who married George John Browne 3rd Marquis of Sligo- Part of this novel is set in the West Indies, De Peyronnet was born in Trinidad in 1841, so presumably would have been interested in the setting. Black and Armstrong nd circa 1850s 8vo Soft wrappered copy. pp. 554. Lacks front wrapper. Chipped and slightly creased back pages. Thomas Hardy's copy. Signed but partially erased. Signed again at end of Aeneid book two "T Hardy Octo 1859" Noted above in pencil "I have finished the 2nd book x" There are numerous pencil crosses throughout the first two books of the Aeneid and several pages in book one with pen and pencil annotation in Hardy's hand. Contained in a purpose made slip case with receipts and letters from the Hardy Scholar C.J.P Beatty. This copy was unknown for round 50 years. Virgils Aeneid influenced Hardy's Poetry and also his first novel Desperate remedies, a character is named Aeneas Marston.. This book belonged to Hardy when he was 19 years old. Millgate suggests that much of Hardy's annotation in the classic books is possibly later but it appears from this copy that Hardy was working through translating the Aeneid from latin at a fairly slow pace and as there is no annotation after Chapter 2 perhaps he found it too hard going £2650.009554.
